Samhain is the Irish name for the celebration of the Winter Quarter day which was celebrated around November 1st starting at sunset on October 31st. It marked the beginning of the Dark half of the year and was considered the beginning of the New Year. This holiday eventually became modern Halloween as immigrants from Scotland and Ireland brought their Christianized version of Samhain (All-Hallows Eve) with them to America. Old Samhain traditions included divination, guising (mask and costume wearing), making offerings to the dead, and dodging malevolent fairies.

We will honor the old ways first by communing with the ancestors and remembering those who have passed on, celebrating the subtle beauty of the season, and divining what the next turn of the wheel holds for us. Please bring a photograph of a person or pet you would like to honor to put on the Ancestor Altar for the evening, and bring your pressing questions for our diviners to illuminate.

But Samhain is not just a solemn holiday – as the Pagan New Year, we must bring joy to our celebration, and after our ceremonial workings, it's time to party! The Speakeasy is the perfect place for a dance party, so dress your Gothic best and vibe with a well-curated darkwave, post-punk, synthpop and vintage Goth playlist. We'll have a cash bar to keep the party going with a selection of beer, wine, mixed drinks, and mocktails; and you will have one (1) drink ticket for any of these options included in your ticket. Light food will be provided including gluten-free and vegetarian options. Sit back and chill, or get your dance on – it's up to you how to enjoy this night.

Tickets are $20 for members and $25 for non-members of HVGW. We will have a limited number of sponsored tickets for those who are dealing with financial hardship, please let us know on your RSVP if you would like to be considered for this.
