Samhain is the Irish name for the celebration of the Winter Quarter day which was celebrated around November 1st starting at sunset on October 31st. It marked the beginning of the Dark half of the year and was the new year. This eventually became modern Halloween as immigrants from Scotland and Ireland brought their Christianized Samhain, All-Hallows Eve, with them to America. This was usually celebrated with divinations, guising, making offerings to the dead and spirits, and other festive activities.
Samhain has many traditions associated with its celebration and there are many ways to celebrate this holiday. This year, we are encouraging participants to have a more in-depth experience with one of these aspects with breakout group rituals. You will have the choice of participating in a ritual to the Ancestors, an offering to the Fae, a divination session for the group or a ceremony for acquiring good fortune and blessings for the New Year. All will come together again, share what they have wrought in the course of their workings and celebrate together around the bonfire. Food and merriment will follow into the night!
We will have an ancestor altar available if you wish to place a picture of your beloved dead or a relevant item on it. Please make sure if you bring a picture that all in the picture are deceased. If the weather is inclement we will move our celebration indoors, but please dress for the weather in any case. This ceremony is adult-oriented, so please use discretion in deciding to bring younger people. Alcohol will be present and you may bring your own, however please save it for after the ceremony. We expect all attendees to make responsible decisions around substance use.
We will have food available after ritual - our current menu is roasted pork loin, mashed potatos and roasted vegetables. Sides, appetizers, drinks and desserts are welcome! Please indicate on your RSVP what you will be bringing, if anything.
We encourage everyone to come in garb or costume!
RSVP here by Wednesday October 22nd to attend this gathering. We hope to see you there!
